Wengen
Everyone's idea of the perfect winter sports resort
click here for region details No roads lead to Wengen so there's no traffic except for the silent little electric trolleys that carry goods around. It is reached by mountain railway which winds its way up in around 14 minutes from Lauterbrunnen in the valley below and is a charming and unspoilt village lying on a sunny plateau with spectacular views to the high Alps. Its wooden chalets and relaxed atmosphere, together with the backcloth of the Eiger and Jungfrau Mountains, makes it everyone's idea of the perfect winter resort. Although an unspoilt village it's nevertheless a lively place with a choice of long established hotels, cosy stüblis and lively bars. The exciting Lauberhorn race (Men's World Cup) is held here every year (11-13 January in 2007). Aprés SkiUnsophisticated and relaxed, the choice ranges from lively discos where you can dance the night away to cosy stüblis where you can just relax with a gluhwein. You are certain to find somewhere that is perfectly suited to your taste and style. The Pickel Bar, Tanne Bar and Crystal are popular venues in the heart of the village with a lively atmosphere, especially as skiers wind their way home from the ski slopes. The Silberhorn and Arvenstube have a more relaxed atmosphere. As Wengen is compact and traffic free many people enjoy a walk round the village after dinner and you can call in to the ‘piano bar’ at the Beausite Park hotel or relax in the beautiful rustic stübli of the Schönegg. There’s a bowling alley with a bar at Sinnas and some pool tables at another venue. Most weeks there’s either an ice hockey match or floodlit ski jumping. Wengen’s relaxed apres ski life is perfect partner to the more energetic pleasures of the ski slopes. |
