Flims
The 'White Arena' with over 200km of ski pistes and a glacier
|
Perched on a sunny terrace above the upper reaches of the Rhine this is a long established resort which had undergone considerable development in recent years. Although the ski area has been extended to over 220km of pistes nevertheless Flims, Laax and Falera is still basically a resort with three villages sharing the same ski area. A resort that is very popular with the Swiss themselves so you could not have a better recommendation!
Flims, Laax Flalera boasts over 200km of ski pistes and as this is all topped by the Vorab Glacier at 3,000m you can be sure of good snow conditions throughout the season. There are three main interconnecting areas with three base stations all covered by a single ski pass and one feature of this resort is some very long ski runs together with a well planned lift system. Snowboarders are also well catered for throughout the whole area. A frequent shuttle bus service links Flims Dorf & Waldhaus with Laax and Falera. Foppa-Naraus A three seater chair lift goes up from Flims base station to Foppa from where the second stage of the chair lift takes you on up to 1,905m at Naraus from where there is a choice of easy and medium runs. Alternatively you can take the cable car up to Cassons Grat at 2,670m from where there are black runs for the more proficient skier. Nagens this is the hub of a large ski area with a variety of pistes fanning out in all directions. This area is reached either by taking the gondola and cable car connections from Flims Dorf or by skiing across from Naraus to Casson Grat. A chair lift can then take you up to La Siala at 2,8100m from where there are some exciting runs for the intermediate skier. One of these runs brings you to the drag lift that can take you up to 3,018m on the Vorab Glacier. From here two easy runs are available or you can take the exhilarating 10km run down to Alp Ruschein on the very edge of Flims Laax Falera. Crap Sogn Gion This area at 2,350m is reached either by cable car from Flims, Laax or Falera or by skiing across from Nagens. From here there are pleasant easy runs down to the little hamlet of Falera or a choice of easy or difficult runs back to Laax. Alternatively you can make your way back to Nagens from where you can ski back down to Flims. All in all a superb winter resort with long runs and a well planned lift system - one of Switzerland's best kept secrets! Resort FacilitiesIce Rinks Indoor and outdoor rinks at the sports centre. Aprés SkiThere is a wealth of choice in this resort and half the fun will be doing the rounds to find your favourite watering hole. Our suggestion is the Iglu Bar – a place to see and be seen in – situated at the base station of the mountain railway. Next why not try the Crap Bar – don’t let the name put you off - Crap is the word for a large rock or stone. The imposing feature here is the 24 ton granite bar! Also situated at the mountain railway base station you can easily visit both bars before heading home. In Flims Waldhaus there is a well stocked wine cellar at the Segnes Wine Bar or there is the bar at the new micro brewery behind the Waldeck Hotel. From here it is also only a short walk downhill for guests staying at the Sunstar Surselva Hotel. |
