Picturesque village resort with a glacier and easy access from Zurich

The picturesque village of Engelberg, which is overlooked by its famous 12th century Benedictine Abbey, is set at the foot of the mighty Titlis mountain at the head of a beautiful valley which leads up from Lake Lucerne. It’s a charming spot with a relaxed holiday atmosphere and in the centre of Engelberg there are narrow traffic free streets, surrounded by the most spectacular and breathtaking scenery. The Titlis Glacier means that Engelberg boasts guaranteed snow and it is even possible to ski here in July! Just 2½hrs from Zurich airport it is also an ideal spot for a short break as it is usually not necessary to leave Engelberg until late afternoon for your homeward journey giving you an extra day’s skiing – a bonus on a short break. With a maximum altitude of 3,050m and a glacier, good snow conditions are a feature of this resort which boasts over 80km of pistes in three different ski areas (two of which are interconnecting) with something to suit all grades of skier. Trübsee/Titlis The frequent ski bus shuttle service takes about 5 minutes to bring you from the village to the gondolas or funicular which take you up to Gerschnialp. From here two further cable cars run parallel up to Trübsee at 1,800m. From here a large ski area fans out in two directions or there are easy and medium runs back down to the village. From Trübsee you can take a cable car up to Stand (2,428m) or the chair lift that goes up to Laub from where there are superb runs for the intermediate and good skier. From Stand a cable car climbs up to the Titlis at 3,020m where there is a restaurant with terrace and a spectacular view over the Alps. The run back to Stand over the glacier is for the better skier but the long run back to the village is also ideal for intermediate skiers. Titlis to the village is a 12km run with a drop of over 2,000m. There are restaurants at Titlis, Trübsee and Stand. Jochpass From Trübsee you can cross the frozen lake by chair lift to Alpstübli where there is a four seater chairlift up to the Jochpass at 2,207m and then a six person high speed chair lift to the Jochstock at 2,564m. There is a Terrin park with corners and boxes at Jochpass. Restaurants at Alpstübli & Jochpass as well as several mountain huts on the runs back to the village. Brunni This mountain is famous for its sunny south facing slopes. There is now a new valley station just 4 minutes by bus from the town centre where the cable car brings to Ristis at 1,600m you can continue by chair lift up to Brunni and then a drag lift to Schonegg at 2,040m with a variety of runs for the medium skier and ski runs back down to the village. Two mountain restaurants. Resort FacilitiesCross Country On the edge of the village as well as up at Gerschnialp or Trübsee which means that langlauf skiing is usually available late in the season. Toboggan There is a 3.5km toboggan run from Gerschnialp. Toboggans available at Gerschnialp and Fridays and Saturdays from 7.30pm - 9.30pm there is often a torchlight descent. Sports Centre Situated in the village centre it has an indoor swimming pool, skating and curling rinks and two indoor tennis courts. Kindergarten Monday to Friday from 08.45 for children aged 2 to 6. Either for just play or to start to learn to ski. 5 days about 250sfrs plus lunch at 12sfrs per day. There is a day nursery offered by Schweizer Skischule Engelberg-Titlis Non Skiers Plenty of walking opportunities. Nearby is the great Lake of Lucerne which offers interesting excursion possibilities in the city of Lucerne. Engelberg’s great Benedictine Abbey is also well worth a visit.

Aprés SkiLively and varied with a choice of bars and stüblis, often with music. For après ski happy hour try the Chalet, Yucatan or Eden bars for half priced drinks. The Banklialp is a well known spot for a lively folklore evening with a fondue and local wine. The Spindle has a reputation for being the best spot for music and dancing. The traffic free centre of the village makes a stroll after dinner a real pleasure and there are plenty of cosy stüblis and bars to distract you. |
